What it actually is

Named for a Catholic saint's feast day, but in practice this is a full-blown neighborhood street party — grilled sardines, paper decorations, and dancing in the street. Nobody's expecting you to know the religious backstory to join in.

What to expect

Extremely crowded and smoky (in a good way) — the whole point is grilled sardines on every corner.
Loud and very social — one of the easiest nights of the year to end up talking to strangers.
Runs late — the biggest night is one specific evening, but smaller parties continue for days after.

Where it's celebrated

Concentrated in the old hillside neighborhoods (Alfama, Graça, Mouraria) — the newer parts of the city are much quieter.
