Pick by trip length and language comfort before you pick by vibe — a 5-day first trip somewhere with easy transit and some English will teach you more about whether you like solo travel than a bucket-list destination will.
Start with these three questions
- How many days do you actually have?
- How comfortable are you navigating without much of the local language?
- Do you want a city (easier logistics) or somewhere more remote (more planning)?
A reasonable first pick
For a 5-7 day first solo trip from the US, a walkable city with decent English and cheap, reliable transit — Medellín, Lisbon, and Chiang Mai (all covered in our destination guides) all fit that bar.
The honest caveat
It's tempting to pick your first solo trip based on the most photogenic place you've seen online. That's a fine second or third trip — for a first one, easy logistics matter more than the view.
