Safety · Medellín

Is Medellín safe for solo female travelers?

Quick answer

Yes — Medellín is one of the more solo-friendly cities in Colombia, especially in Poblado and Laureles. Use the same street sense you'd use in any big city, and you'll be fine.

Where to base yourself

Two neighborhoods cover most solo travelers’ needs, for different reasons.

  • Poblado — walkable, well-lit, full of other travelers. Easiest first base.
  • Laureles — quieter, more local, better food-to-tourist ratio once you’re settled in.

Getting around

The Metro is clean, cheap, and safe during the day. Use the app for rides at night rather than hailing on the street — this is standard local practice, not a special solo-traveler precaution.

The honest caveat

Like any big city, stay aware in less touristed areas after dark. That's true of Medellín the same way it's true of Chicago or Barcelona — it isn't a reason to rethink the trip.
