Here are my top tips on how to dine alone as a single traveller without feeling awkward.
- The most important tip! Try to conquer a little of your fear. Experiment with local cuisine and embrace the experience – after all, you’ve already made the bold step of exploring the world. Choose the restaurant based on recommendations and of course, the more locals dining, the better the restaurant will be.
- Do your research. Many restaurants try and cater for single diners – for example Zagat guides often include a section on Singles Dining as do city guides such as Time Out.
- Peer in the window. Too crowded, too small, too formal? You’ll soon pick up an instinct for what kind of space and ambience you’ll feel relaxed in.
- Go for busy restaurants; it means the food should be good, and single diners are likely to be put together at busy times.
- Avoid stuffy formal restaurants. Less expensive restaurants are normally more friendly and the staff and guests are more likely to chat.
- Break your fear of speaking to someone you don’t know – for example prepare a good opening gambit. Something like: “I’ve heard xxxxx museum is the best in town – is it true?” and show them your guidebook. It often creates interest and people love giving advice.
- On a beach holiday, try to frequent the same bar/cafe. You get known. Sushi restaurants work well, as do any Spanish-style tapas.
- Take something to do. You can loose yourself in a novel, or lose yourself trawling Facebook on your iPhone. Look busy and people will take you seriously. You may want to consider a slim hardcover book or magazine — something you can lay flat whilst eating.
- Eat at the bar. Particularly in North America and in UK gastropubs, there are other people to chat with including the bartender and other solo diners.
- Avoid a bad seat – Don’t take a dodgy seat just because you’re on your own. If you are not happy and the restaurant is not full, ask to be moved.
- Connect with communal diners… Ask your hotel concierge about restaurants in the immediate area that integrate solo diners. Although still in its infancy, the concept of communal table dining is becoming more popular across the world and they are incredible way to share a meal and meet with the locals.
