Traveling in your 50s doesn’t have to be about just ticking off bucket lists either.
If you’re fit and active, there are plenty of other options out there for you. Whether you want to go on a hiking trip and take in some nature or splurge a little on a luxury holiday, there are vacations to suit very budget, taste and age.
Here are some ideas to whet your travel appetite.
5 Activity Holidays For Over 50s
1. Sailing in The Grenadines
Sailing is an ideal activity for the more mature crowd because it allows you to stay active and enjoy nature out on the water.
Also known as the “Spice Islands”, the Grenadines are a group of 32 islands spread out across the southern Caribbean in the West Indies. It’s a great place to enjoy postcard perfect beaches, meet friendly people, and relax on powdery white beaches. There are also options to charter boats in Port Elizabeth, coupled with private boat tours.
2. Walking in Europe
Walking is one of the best activities for over 50s who love to stay active.
While Europe may be known for its rich history and culture, the continent is also home to some of the best walking trails in the world. Think Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Norway…every country in Europe has something to offer!
But for those seeking thrills off-the-beaten-path, I’ll bet Bulgaria is one place you may not have considered!
It is home to some of Europe’s finest but lesser known hill walks. The Rila and Pirin ranges in the south of the country are littered with gorgeous pine trees, wide glacial lakes as well as the highest summit in the Balkans. A typical trek goes for 7 days and journeys through some of the most beautiful lakes and waterfalls in the region.
3. Hop on a Vespa
The Vespa has come a long way in earning its place as the most iconic scooter in the world. To top it off, they are easy to ride and will have anyone in their 50s feeling alive as they zip around foreign cities.
Explore the wine regions of Spain on your own Vespa or make your own Roman Holiday a reality by taking a Vespa tour around the historical city of Rome. Greece, Portugal and the Canary Islands are other great spots for some Vespa riding.
For the more adventurous, why not consider Ho Chi Minh city?
Formerly known as Saigon, and the largest city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh city is a chaotic but fun place to discover by scooter and put your motor riding skills to the test.
4. Luxury in Antarctica
This one is for boomers with an ambitious budget.
Although it’s pricey, a visit to White Desert Camp is the only chance you’ll get to wake up next to gigantic icefalls and immerse yourself in nature in ways you never could otherwise.
While it identifies itself as a luxury hotel (the guest list includes names such as Prince Harry), the White Desert also offers a tonne of adventures including one which takes you into an Emperor Penguin colony.
This trip is for more intrepid souls in search of something that little bit different!
5. Camping in the USA
Although the USA is home to world class cities like New York and San Francisco, it is also home to some of the best national parks in the world.
What better way to have an activity holiday in your 50s than to pack up your tent and go camping? There are so many beautiful national parks in this country that you will be spoilt for choice.
To get you started, here are some of the more well known parks; Yellowstone in Montana, Yosemite in California and if distance isn’t an issue, Kluane and Glacier Bay national parks in Alaska are definitely worth the trek.
Traveling in your 50s doesn’t have to be boring. As you can see, there are plenty of activity holidays for over 50s out there and plenty of adventures to be had.
